What the 2016 Census Reveals about Albury's Workforce

20 November 2017

New data from the 2016 Census released by the Australian Bureau of Statistics (ABS) earlier this month has added to the picture of Albury’s workforce.

The latest tranche of information shows Albury’s total labour force as 24,800, representing a 5% increase from June 2015.

More than half (55.3%) reported being employed full time, with 64% of full time employees being male. Comparatively, of the 32.9% who reported being employed part time, the large majority were female (71%).

Just over a third of the Albury population, aged over 15 years, was not in the labour force (33.4%) and included retirees, students and stay-at-home parents.

More Albury residents are employed in the health care & social assistance industry than ever before, with the sector now accounting for 17.2% of the local labour force, an increase of 3.2 percentage points since the 2011 Census.

In line with a national shift, employment is in decline in the manufacturing industry, down from 12.8% in the 2011 Census to 7.2% in 2016.

Professionals are still the most commonly reported occupation, accounting for 20% of the labour force, followed by clerical & administrative workers and technicians and trade workers.

Unsurprisingly the occupation that experienced the most growth over the last five years was health professionals, now accounting for 12.7% of Albury’s labour force.

Our population is also becoming increasingly well educated. There was a significant increase in the number of Albury residents who have obtained post-graduate degrees (up 30% from 2011 Census results) and the number of vocational qualifications grew by 2,132 across the city, as well as those with a bachelor degree or higher (+1,086).

Census data is an important tool for Council to inform future planning for vital services in the Albury community. Specific data from the 2016 Census is now available through the Albury Economic Indicators which can be downloaded here.
